Intervista a Jonathan Symmonds

["My name is Jonathan Symmonds and i am the Lead Animator of the Dragons on the TV series "The Game of Thrones," at Pixomondo in Germany, Frankfurt. I’m living in Italy at the moment in Monterubbiano, a small town in the Province of Fermo but I was born in Durban, South Africa. I grew up on a small farm Zimbabwe where I attended College, until in 2001, i decided to take advantage of the skills i had and moved to the United Kingdom. I worked multiple jobs to put myself through University where I graduated with Honors and not long after that i started working in some big Visual Effects companies in Central London. I am a Visual Effects Artist: in Italy there are a lot of similar people with a lot of talent, however i feel that not everyone has the strength to progress to the next level, they seem to be stuck in this protective bubble, whereby those with skills feel they should just stay here instead of exploring other countries or industries. I have been fortunate to have worked on some of the following films to name a few: "The Nutcracker" by Andrej Končalovskij, "Avatar" by James Cameron and "Where the wild things are" by Spike Jonze. I came to Italy to work as a freelancer, and ended up staying longer than i anticipated. Being a freelancer left me unrestricted to working for only one company and this lead to the opportunity to be called to Pixomondo Frankfurt in Germany to work on the Game of Thrones, where i could use my skills to better effect. This is my second season with Pixomondo and I hope I can continue this cooperation in the future."]

[The figure of the dragon is present in the collective imagination of almost every culture. In western culture, it is a malevolent creature which brings death; in the eastern one instead, it is inextricably linked to good fortune and to happiness. "Games of Thrones" seems to be able to convey both connotations: the dragon seems to be a mix of calm behavior people it trusts and aggressive with the enemy. What type of work is there in the graphic variation according to its' different moods?]

["We must remember, that the behavior of the dragons is dependent on the environment they live in. I think it's the same for any type of animal: a dog is aggressive in a dangerous situation, yet docile when it is in a more relaxed environment. When creating the facial expressions, it is really important to understand the dragons' emotions, because there isn’t any specific reference, you need to combine together several elements belonging to different species to achieve the effect you want: for those with an angry face you must keep into consideration that they are characterized by a particular stretching compared to those with relaxed faces, less involved and consequently more open. It is my observation of these references that i then need to translate into animation, the 3D software i use, "Autodesk Maya," allows me to control the movements and performance of the Dragons over time, with relative ease by manipulating a "rig" as we call it, that translates and moves the underlying skeleton of the character. On top of this, the "mesh" or geometry moves with the skeleton creating the illusion of animation. The trick is to make the movements as realistic as possible based on the reference I have done previously and creating an overall believable performance relating to "weight" and of course perfect timing."]

[Did the creative process of the dragon’s figure include the knowledge that it would have reached an adult likeness or the representation of its specific components would have evolved with the growth of the animal?]

["The evolution process of the dragons changes together with its' age and this can be noted in the existing differences between the fifth and the sixth series – from what we have seen so far – where their character undergoes some notable transformations at an individual level. 'Drogon,' (the main Dragon) seems to have a special relationship with Daenerys (Kahleesi) and his instinct leads him to protect her, he is the only one we have seen to be independent in comparison with the other two Dragons that have been kept in captivity."]

[How did the plot affect on your visual autonomy?]

["Whenever we work on the Dragons, everything is kept Top Secret. We are also kept in the dark about the story of each episode and will only be given a sequence in an episode to work on, thus keeping the plot of the episode secure. I believe that this is really important as the leaking of information or "spoilers" does exactly what it means, it spoils the excitement when it comes to finally watching an episode."]

[You have recently shared the video of the New Yorker magazine vocativ, which shows the creation process of the dragon through its phases: the first research is based on real animals to make the creatures as realistic as possible, the specific reference is to the crocodile’s skin and to the bats’ wings. Is it paradoxical to derive from reality in order to make the fantastic more believable?]

["Our task is to create characters which belong to, in this case a fantasy World and sure, we have to face many different ideas of what a dragon would look like in this wonderful and mysterious world in the Game of Thrones, would they have more than two wings, or two heads? What is the colour of the skin, does it have scales or horns? etc etc. Our dragon has been structured on the anatomy of many different creatures and reptiles bringing over a great number of components which belong to them: - what will the hips look like for example, the chest and the long neck? Regarding the wings, they MUST obviously be proportionate to the body, the Dragon must be able to fly and it must be credible that the means used can withstand the weight of its' body. We referenced many different type of flyig animals to support the theory how an extremely heavy Dragon would fly believably. Anyway let’s go into a bit more detail: one example is that of the wings’ skin, when we were referncing bats, they withdraw their wings behind their backs when they rest, and the skin in between the fingers is suitable for this kind of movement, but it is important to consider that the skin covering the chest looks very strong in general. The same is true for the face, we created a texture which is similar to an alligators’; as i mentioned before, there aren’t any guidelines on how to create the perfect dragon and, in my opinion, Drogon is by far the most beautiful and anatomically correct Dragon we have ever seen on TV. Regarding scales and proportions: the details of the skin, horns, teeth and even the saliva, the way he spits fire, are some of the components which have hardly been investigated in such depth so far with similar results from cinematography. We even created such details as the glands on the side of the mouth, they secrete a chemical substance which is able to trigger the process that creates the flame, to justify it anatomically."]

[No paradox then, it quite seems that in the world of the fantastic nothing is created from scratch (or ex novo).]

["In animation terms we call this phenomenon the "Suspension of disbelief," which is a key concept behind animation. We as humans are naturally curious and have a unique ability to allow ourselves the luxury of believing in something that may or may not exist. Practically the answer to your question "Why do you believe in Mickey Mouse?". He is a fictional character and he doesn’t exist! Our imagination allows us to conceive of strange and mythical creatures and characters that we then bring to life in the creation process of VFX. In the Visual Effects Industry we try to be as faithful as possible to the reality of the character creation process. Let me explain this a bit further, a dragon that doesn't look real in its' environment or maybe it's' movement performance seems a little "wierd" or strange, will break the illusion and therefore our "suspension of disbelief." Joe Bauer, (the visual effects supervisor for HBO) argues that the best compliment you can give to our work in Visual Effects is to say that it is "invisible." This being said, if my animation receives a great compliment such as "it was really believable," then i have achieved my goal. It is important to understand that the creatures and characters we create are comprised of reference from other characters and creatures that we find in the real World. We first create an idea, then translate it to paper and eventually to 3D whereby we can create anything we imagine from scratch as you say, but first it is realized."]

[What is the relationship between an animator and an actor? Are you both the vital breath of someone or something, while filming how does the task of one integrate with that of the other?]

Lavorano in simbiosi.

["The relationship is extremely important. A great actor will always consider the role of the Visual Effects team that will be replacing a dummy or object with some kind of creature or character. A bad actor however, will not consider this and we have to somehow make our animation work with the poor acting performance of the actors and actresses. It is important for both to work well together to achieve "suspension of disbelief." Daenerys acting against the Dragons is phenominal and she has the ability to see and visualize the dragons even though she is acting against a dummy object or a placement holder as we call it in VFX or on set. Tyrions performance in the basement in Episode 01 of Season 6 was absolutely fantastic and an absolute pleasure to be able to create my animation performance with his acting performance. They go hand in hand. When we integrate Kahleesi onto 'Drogon' for example, you must imagine a machine that simulates the movements of the Dragon in all their phases such as those for example that provide the floating (hovering) in the air. Daenerys mounts a green support - that is shaped like the back of 'Drogon.' It is important for the actress to be sitting on this apparatus because it provides us with the proper shadows that Daenerys produces. We then take items like this (the shadows) and place them onto our Dragon in 3D to add more realism."]

[Did the actor's body bind your work?]

["I am bound by what is filmed, to the human character, when the machine performs the movement towards a certain direction I have to adapt myself to respect it, I am obliged to perform the exact movement the actress makes. There is however a long pre-visualization process before filming takes place so the everything runs smoothly on the shoot. At the end of the day, the Dragons' on the Game of Thrones would not be so successful and realistic without the input of a large number of extremely talented artists. We all work together and overcome obstacles in all areas to achieve the final images you see on your screens. Our work, a lot of the time is under-appreciated in relation to just how much time and effort goes into such a short time visually on screen. The team i worked with at Pixomondo in Frankfurt Germany, are some of the best in the World at what they do and i am proud to have been the Lead Animator for the last two seasons."]

["I want to add one last thing: we met on the beach of a town along the Adriatic coast named Porto San Giorgio in Italy. As the iconography records, St. George faced a dragon to save a young girl from a village of which he was the guardian. Coming back here to this wonderful place after having animated such great characters on the worldwide phenomenon "The Game of Thrones," which has been running now since 2011, is a nice coincidence. I would like the youth of today, here in Italy and indeed the rest of the world to take a moment and think about what you want out of life. If you want to become successful then do it, don't just sit around thinking it will come to you because trust me it won't! What is important for the talented artists here is that you MUST learn a foreign language that gives you the opportunity to go out and pursue your dreams. Try not to get stuck in a bubble where the language barrier can be an obstacle to achieve your ultimate dreams of success. The opportunities in Europe and indeed the rest of the World for skilled 3D artists is already out there and if you are thinking you are not good enough yet, then practice, learn some 3D software and apply your skills to better use in Visual Effects. I came from a small farm in the mountains in Zimbabwe in Africa and look where I am today. Everything is possible, just believe in yourself, then make it happen. A final quote that i think is relative to any young artist, "Surround yourselves only with the best, the better they are, the better you will become!"]

[I would like to thank all those who have supported me in my career so far and a special thanks to Sven Martin, the VFX Supervisor at Pixomondo-Frankfurt, for his amazing visual guidance and patience. I would also like to thank Viktorija Ogureckaja and Mona Mohr, my producers, who kept us all on track throughout the season. Lat but not least the team at Pixomondo, without you all we wouldn't have such amazing Dragons in the Game of Thrones.]
